5 Tips to help you feel more organized.
Let’s be honest; sometimes life takes over and you feel like you don’t have enough time in the day to get stuff done. Occasionally, you start feeling like you are only home long enough to through yours stuff down, feed everyone, and run to the next event on your jam-packed calendar. For being a stay-at-home mom, you sure aren’t home much! 🙂
You are a busy gal running the kids to their next school function, getting to practices, running errands, volunteering your time, and just plain “getting stuff done”.
The age-old question, “What did you do today”, is sometimes better answered, “What didn’t I do?”
The truth is, I’ve found myself stressed out occasionally simply because of bad planning.
….I forgot I signed up for treats this day. I don’t know where you put your bag. Oh, shoot, I should have been at this place ten minutes ago. Where is my shoe? The list goes on and on about what is taking up our days.
I have found out that just a little bit of planning can help ease the major frustration of an out-of-control day a bunch.
Start each day with a plan.
I’m a list maker so I will jot down a couple of notes to myself of what needs done. List making helps me give myself a time-line of what I need to accomplish and how much time each item on the list will take out of my day. You can download the free printable To-Do List that I use here.
Make yourself a mental or visual overview.
I feel that it’s helpful in warding off stress if I know what is coming. Map out what your day/week/month will look like. This is usually where a desk planner or calendar hanging on the fridge comes in handy. Include scheduled time for appointments, activities, and free time in your mapping.
Unexpected surprise scheduling does happen but with a clear view of what is on the agenda already, the added events shouldn’t be too hard to pencil in.
Knowing what is coming up in the near future can help you plan for things that need your immediate attention. You will be able to avoid stress and enjoy the scheduled activities if you are better prepared.
For instance: If you have a bake sale that you volunteered for this week, you can include shopping for ingredients, prep-time, and delivery on your calendar.
Decided what is important and what can wait.
You know you only have so many hours or minutes in a day that you can dedicate to a certain project. If you can schedule time in your day to work on that task, you can concentrate on what absolutely needs your attention. The rest will be there tomorrow. Trust me on this.
It’s okay to give yourself the freedom to decide what is mandatory for the day and what can wait until you get to it. Some unnecessary stress is avoidable if you know how to prioritize.
Concentrate on the area that nags at you most.
When overwhelmed, take a moment to regroup. Decide what area in your life makes you feel more in control. Multi-tasking is a must for moms but sometimes, you just need to focus on one area and get your task done so you can move on to something else.
Knowing my house is a disaster puts me into stress mode. Under more consideration, I have decided my biggest stress trigger is the kitchen, so that is where I focus my energy and time first. I know that the whole house is a mess but if I can get the dishes done and the counters wiped off in the kitchen, I can relax and get to the rest of the house when time permits and things slow down.
Use your free-time wisely.
We don’t usually get very much unscheduled time to regroup before we are rushing to the next event. Make sure you are making time for you. Does your schedule include a block of time that you can work out? Do you need a family night? Will you have time to watch TV or read something that relaxes you after you get the kids to bed? You shouldn’t always focus on family, spouse, and next organized event.
Sometimes, you need to take care of yourself. Free-time is a must for de-stressing, frazzle free moms. Of course, you can always get better at the art of learning how to say “no” to others that want a spot in your schedule, but that is for another post. 😉
